Day 2 – Moreton Island continued…

Our first full day on Moreton Island the weather was pleasant but not hot. There was a strong wind which kept the temperatures down. For bought some cereal, milk, and juice from the general store on the resort for breakfast and had our breakfast sitting at a table looking out across the beach at the ocean.

After breakfast we let the kids play in the sand and waves. Wyatt loves sand. He could play on the beach all day. Cooper and Maddie however, did not like the sand. They must wear shoes at all times and are do not like the feel of it on their hands or feet.

The kids started to get tired so we went for a walk down the beach to see the Tangalooma Wrecks. Basically an artificial reef that the resort has created by sinking half a dozen old ships. Our stollers had to share the beach with various 4 wheel drive trucks as many people take the car ferry over with them and then drive around the islands beachs and sand dunes.

We had a quick lunch back at the resort. Food was super expensive being a resort on an island so we got all of our take out food from just one of the several restaurants as it had some reasonable priced stuff.

After lunch Mel and I signed up for the Quad-bike tour while Julia stayed with the kids for their nap. The tour was fun. Everyone gets a 4 wheeler and then they have as go through a very simple obstacle course where they single out anyone that can’t ride very well. They they split you into groups of 4 or 5 riders to 1 guide where all the people are of a similar level. Then your guide takes you ona 45 minute tour where you get to see some great views of the bay and ride over sand dunes, around sand berm corners , and numerous other sand obstacles. It was actually really fun ! We were of course in the advanced group and our group moved pretty quickly and our leader took us down some pretty steep hills towards the end.

After that I braved the cold water and took a quick swim with Wyatt since he decided he didn’t need an afternoon nap. Then more playing in the sand with the other kids joining after their nap. As we were planning on doing the wild dolphin feeding in the evening we decided to kill some time and put off diner by giving the kids some ice cream cones. They thought this to be a great idea…although Cooper still hasn’t quite mastered the technique.

For the dolphin feeding they have bleachers set up along one side of a pier looking down on the area where they feed the dolphins. You show up at 6 pm and they give your what turned out to be an hour long seminar on how to feed the dolphins while the dolphins show up one by one and start splashing and jumping beside the pier. We attempted to enjoy this while wrestling with 3 over tired, hungry, ice creamed toddlers. Not the best planning on our parts…Anyway, when they finish the speech you get in line to go onto the beach. They have trained the dolphins to line up across the beach in about waist deep water. Then they get the people to form lines on the beach for each of the dolphins. When your turn comes you wash your hands in a bucket of special water and soap, then grab a dead fish from a second bucket and wade out to the dolphin with a dolphin trainer. You then bend down and put the fish in front of the dolphin and they swim up and eat it out of your hand. We each carried a kid and despite all being over tired and hungry they all managed to stop fidgeting and enjoy the moment. Wyatt was very proud to have fed “tinkerbell” who had babies in her belly.

Dinner was a bit of a fiasco as the take out pizza took over and hour to cook and they dropped our order of fish and chips and had to remake them. On the bright side they gave it to Mel for free.

Wyatts comment of the day: Mommy, mommy, here’s your diarrhea coke.
