Canada Day Down Under

Winter weather (sweaters and pants), limited selection of friends (at least that were willing to accept our patriotism for what is was - an excuse to get together) and the fact that July 1st snuck up on us quite quickly made for a more humble affair than last year's party. We invited our Canadian friends (Kerri and Dave Lambert (a friend from McGill - no joke!) and their kids Loic and Taya, over for some steak and beer (the only Canadian brands sold here are Kokanee and Labatt's Blue). We dressed the kids up and they enjoyed some party favours, red stars (in place of maple leafs) and some fine dining.

Cooper got a taste of some Cayenne pepper that did not impress him...

The boys watched a little television then the event ended for us as many do with young children, at around 8 with kids in pjs being strapped into car seats or loaded into their cribs. We had high hopes that Zak and Julia would carry the torch for us to the Melbourne bars but my dacquiris did them in and they decided to save the Lambert directed pub crawl for a night when they would not have to wake up at 8 am to look after children. Good thing to, as I woke up the next day with the flu and had to rely on them to look after the kids while I found a doctor and got some drugs. We look forward to future parties back at 10 Fern, if not next year, then definitely in 2010. Hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating - it's a country worth drinking to!
